Divorce

One out of every two marriages ends in divorce.

In Florida, to get married you need the state's permission. Visit the courthouse at your convenience, pay a small fee (about $91), read a marriage pamphlet and the nice lady behind the counter in the clerk's office will sell you a marriage license. Your priest, pastor, rabbi or a notary public will make it legal.

Getting married is simple and fun. Making babies is simple and fun, too. However, remember that both marriage and parenthood each comes with its own set of rights and obligations.

Getting divorced is another story. Not so much fun and not so simple. Most divorces can be gotten quickly and affordably, without a fight. Or you can haggle, fight and torment each other, and go through an expensive and emotionally taxing court proceeding that will take months, or more than a year.

The same lady at the courthouse who sold you your marriage license will "sell" you a divorce for about $364. Well, not really. But she will accept your divorce papers for filing along with the filing fee and assign you a case number and a judge. It's that judge who must sign your final judgment of dissolution (the divorce decree) to make it official. You can't just stop in at the courthouse on your lunch break and wait for it, like you did your marriage license. There is a process; specific laws, detailed rules and court procedures to follow. That's where we come in.
